help paying tuition. terry mcsweeney was live at cal with a preview. >> reporter: uc berkeley pushing the envelope again setting up not just a scholarship fund but the largest scholarship fund for undocumented students in the united states. look at pictures of students about 200 estimated are going to be helped by what is called the dreamer's fund which will begin with a million dollar gift from a foundation students from 20 countries will benefit not eligible for federal grants, loans or work study positions. the chancellor pushed to have this program in place. >> i thought this isn't fair. furthermore, these are extraordinarily talented people. in the current era with an of the challenges we have in california, we cannot afford to waste this kind of talent. >> reporter: the scholarships kick in next fall. another gift of $300,000 with will support new resource center at cal. that largest scholarship fund for undocumented students begins next fall here at uc berkeley. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >>> we hope to learn this morning the identity of the pedestrian killed in san francisco

. this happened just 5th. two men got away in a dodge charger. >> moving on, uc berkeley leading in helping undocumented students get money for education. today, cal announced a grant awarded by the fund for that purpose. abc 7 news is here with a closer look at what that money will do. this other elections like michigan and texas now talking í÷ their own program. >> this was the only student in his high school to get into uc berkeley. >> everybody was happy except me. yeah, i got in. time not going make it. right? i won't be able to go. how am i going pay for this? >> is he an undocumented student and does not qualify for any federal money. the coordinator of the undocumented student program at cal. >> the federal pell grant, work study, loans aren't eligible to undocumented students. >> rivera had a small private scholarship working owed jobs to put himself through cal but it wasn't enough that. is why the chancellor spear headed a scholarship program to help:e students like rivera. the fund responded with a $1 million award. >> the fund one of the core pieces of work is about

: students here at uc berkeley say that they really enjoy the holidays but they say they don't want the salvationy army to be any part of it elm student government passed a resolution banning the charity from bell-ringing, from actually collecting any type of donations on campus because they say they are allegedly antigay. discriminating allegedly against gay and lesbian persons in their soup kitchens, offcampus, and trying to prevent federal funding from going to lbgt causes. while students here on campus have mixed feelings about that. >> always support the salvation army. i didn't know they were antigay, homophobics. >> donating to the salvation army sun -- doesn't mean you're prejudiced against gays and lesbians. just means you want to help people. reporter: in a statement salvation army says it believes all people are equal regardless of sexual oren addition and say, we firmly oppose the mistreatment of lgbt persons. salvation army told me by phone that it does not do any bell-ringing on campus or anywhere without permission. student government here would also like a complete b
